Why Monthly Fire Extinguisher Service Matters

Monthly inspections aren't just good practice—they’re required under NFPA 10 and often by insurance providers and local fire codes. Regular checks help:

✅ Detect damage or tampering early

✅ Confirm visibility and accessibility

✅ Identify low pressure or expired units

✅ Maintain fire code and OSHA compliance

✅ Provide peace of mind for you and your team

Neglecting monthly inspections could lead to fines, safety violations, or a malfunction during an emergency.

Instructions

How many Fire Extinguishers do I need?

This is primarily determined by the square footage of your space, and the travel distance required to reach one

For Commercial Buildings

Businesses must follow OSHA and NFPA 10 standards, which use "travel distance" and "square footage" to determine quantity.

Travel Distance: You must be able to reach an extinguisher within a certain walking distance, measured through hallways (not through walls).

  • Class A (Ordinary paper/wood): 75 feet or less.
  • Class B (Flammable liquids): 30 to 50 feet.
  • Class K (Commercial kitchens): 30 feet or less.

Square Footage (per floor): For general office space, you typically need at least one 2-A rated extinguisher for every 3,000 square feet.

  • Up to 3,000 sq ft: 1–2 extinguishers.
  • 3,000–6,000 sq ft: 2–4 extinguishers.
  • Over 18,000 sq ft: A professional fire protection assessment is required.

Important Rules for All

  • Mounting Height: For Fire Extinguishers under 40 lbs, the top should be no higher than 5 feet off the ground. Heavier units should be no higher than 3.5 feet. All must be at least 4 inches above the floor.
  • Visibility: Fire Extinguishers must be unobstructed and clearly visible. Fire Extinguishers locations must be clearly marked — use OSHA-approved signage even if they are kept in cabinets.

Documentation Requirements

After a certified annual maintenance check, the technician must:

  1. Attach a New Tag: The tag must show the month/year of service, the technician's name/initials, and the agency name.
  2. Apply a New Tamper Seal: A new seal must be installed to prove the unit was not used after the service.
  3. Provide a Verification Collar: If an internal examination was conducted, a circular collar must be placed around the neck of the extinguisher indicating the service date.

Prerequisites

Personnel Requirements for Maintenance

Monthly Inspections

To perform a Monthly Fire Extinguisher Inspection, you do not need special certification, but you must follow specific steps to ensure the unit is "ready for use" as required by OSHA 1910.157 and NFPA 10.

Who Can Perform It?

  • No Certification Required: Any "knowledgeable and competent person" designated by an employer, such as a facility manager, safety officer, or trained employee, can perform the check.
  • Frequency: Must be conducted at approximately 30-day intervals.

Annual Maintenance

To meet the certification standard, a person must:

  • Be Trained & Certified: Pass a test acceptable to the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), such as a state fire marshal or local fire department.
  • Possess Specialized Tools: Have the correct recharging materials, lubricants, and manufacturer-specified replacement parts.
  • Have Access to Manuals: Possess the specific manufacturer’s service manual for every model being serviced.
