Course Overview:


Bloodborne Pathogens Awareness and Safety Training

in the Workplace is designed to provide Students with the essential knowledge necessary to help reduce or eliminate the occupational risk of Bloodborne pathogens.


This course is designed to educate workers on the hazards associated with bloodborne pathogens (BBPs) and how to protect themselves from occupational exposure.


It meets the training requirements of OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard and provides practical guidance on exposure control methods, safe work practices, and emergency response procedures.


Course Objectives:


By the end of this course, participants will be able to:


  • Identify common Bloodborne Pathogens and their transmission methods.
  • Understand OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard requirements.
  • Describe methods to reduce or eliminate exposure risks.
  • Demonstrate the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Follow proper procedures for exposure incidents and post-exposure follow-up.

1. Introduction to Bloodborne Pathogens


  • Definition and purpose of training
  • Overview of the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard
  • Scope and applicability


2. Types of Bloodborne Pathogens


  • HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
  • HBV (Hepatitis B Virus)
  • HCV (Hepatitis C Virus)
  • Other OPIM (e.g., bodily fluids, unfixed tissues)


3. Modes of Transmission


  • Direct and indirect contact
  • Needlestick injuries
  • Contact with mucous membranes or broken skin


4. Exposure Control Plan


  • Purpose and elements
  • Universal Precautions
  • Standard Precautions
  • Engineering and work practice controls


5. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)


  • Types of PPE (gloves, gowns, masks, eye protection)
  • Proper selection, use, and disposal
  • Limitations of PPE


6. Safe Work Practices


  • Proper hand hygiene techniques
  • Housekeeping and disinfection
  • Sharps handling and disposal

7. Hepatitis B Vaccination

Purpose:


The main purpose of the Bloodborne Pathogens Training Course is to educate workers on how to protect themselves from exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) in the workplace.


It aims to ensure compliance with OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) by teaching employees how to identify risks, use personal protective equipment (PPE), follow safe work practices, and respond effectively to exposure incidents.


The ultimate goal is to prevent the transmission of serious diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C, and to promote a safer, more informed workplace.


Target Audience:


Employees who may come into contact with blood or OPIM as part of their job duties, including but not limited to:

  • Healthcare Workers
  • First Responders
  • Custodians and Janitors
  • Laboratory Personnel
  • School Staff
  • Tattoo and Body Art Professionals
  • Industrial Workers


Course Duration:


1 to 2 Hours (depending on depth and employer requirements)


Certification:


Participants receive a Bloodborne Pathogens Training Certificate upon successful completion, valid for 1 year, in accordance with OSHA requirements.


Course Outline for Bloodborne Pathogens Training, designed to meet OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030).


The certificate of completion is available for review by employees and their authorized representatives with the students Training Passport.


Training Passport is a digital Training history of a person's Training Records.


Evaluation:


Students gain knowledge through lectures, group discussions, hands-on exercises, and student participation.


Participants will be evaluated on their knowledge, skills and abilities during the learning seminar and will complete a final examination.


Prerequisites:


No prior Bloodborne Pathogens experience is required.
